Bio
Michael H. Ranzenhofer is a Republican/Conservative candidate in the race for New York’s 61st Senate District. As a citizen legislator, Ranzenhofer has served the people of Erie County for 20 years as Legislator of Erie County’s 4th District, which encompasses the Towns of Clarence and Newstead, and includes portions of the Towns of Amherst and Cheektowaga. Over 90 percent of his district is in the 61st Senate District. In the November 2007 election, Ranzenhofer captured 72 percent of the vote and garnered 64 percent of the vote in 2005.
Ranzenhofer currently serves on the Community Enrichment committee and has previously served on the Finance and Management, Economic Development, and Health committees. He has also been recognized by his peers, being elected both the Majority and Minority Leader of the Erie County Legislature.
Mike Ranzenhofer has been the strongest voice year after year in the Legislature when it comes to reducing the spending of a government that is just too big. One of his highest priorities has been removing the hundreds of thousands of dollars of pork and patronage added to the budget every year. Once elected to the state Senate, Ranzenhofer will continue his fight against wasting taxpayer dollars.
Through his service as County Legislator, he has seen firsthand the impact of Albany mandates on local governments and taxpayers.
And, he has NEVER voted for a tax increase. That includes the ¾ percent sales tax increase and the $8 million in higher property taxes in the county’s 2007 budget. Ranzenhofer believes the answer to New York’s budget problems is to cut spending, cut taxes, and dramatically reform the way Albany does business.
Now, he’s ready to do even more. In the state Senate, Ranzenhofer will continue his fight against unnecessary laws and taxes that drive up the cost of living, and the cost of doing business in the region. His top legislative priority will remain providing homeowners and businesses property tax relief, and enacting policies to stem the population loss the region continues to experience.
In addition to his commitment to public service, Ranzenhofer is a principal partner in the law firm of Friedman & Ranzenhofer, P.C., and remains a citizen legislator. He has offices in Akron, Batavia and Clarence and represents individuals and businesses in Genesee and Erie County. He is a member of several professional associations, including the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, and the Erie County Bar Association.
An active member of his community, Ranzenhofer has served in the past as a member of the Erie County Youth Board, Erie County Industrial Development Agency, Erie County Correctional Facility/Erie County Holding Center Consolidation Task Force, Jewish Family Services, the Amherst Task Force on Substance Use/Abuse, the UB Medical School Institutional Review Board, and the Clarence-Newstead Meals on Wheels Task Force. He has also served on the Amherst Youth Advisory Board, and as Director and Treasurer of the Amherst South Rotary Club, the Amherst Youth Foundation Inc., and as President of the Amherst Jaycees. He has also volunteered as an Assistant Coach for the Amherst Soccer and Hockey Associations, and the Lou Gehrig Baseball and Softball Leagues.
Ranzenhofer graduated Magna Cum Laude from SUNY Albany with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, and earned his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from SUNY Buffalo Law School.
A longtime Amherst resident, he and his wife, Susan, have two children, Lisa and David.
New York’s 61st Senate District includes part of the City of Tonawanda, the Towns of Amherst, Clarence, Newstead and Tonawanda, and the Villages of Akron, Kenmore and Williamsville in Erie County and all of Genesee County.
